You can apply for student housing year-round, however do not apply before you have been accepted to a course at UNIS.

Please note that you must use the option over 31 days, even if you are staying for a shorter period. You will be allocated accommodation for the period you are staying in Svalbard, and only be charged for the period you are staying at Svalbard student home.

Your application will remain active for two months. If you have not received an offer of student housing during this period, you will receive an e-mail about reactivating your application if you are still interesting in getting an apartment. If you don’t reactivate your application, you will be deleted from the waiting list.

You can check the status of your application by logging in to My page. If the status of your application is shown as active, it means your application has been registered and is in the queue to be processed. Your application will remain active until you receive an offer of student housing or it becomes outdated/is not reactivated and is deleted.

Offer of student housing

Offers of student housing are sent electronically, and you will be notified by e-mail. Once you have received an offer, you will find your tenancy agreement and relevant information on My page.

To accept the offer of student housing, sign your tenancy agreement within five days. If the contract is not signed within this period, the offer will expire.
The tenancy agreement is drawn up pursuant to the provisions of the Tenancy Act.

There are three different ways to sign the contract and you may choose the option that best suits you:

Moving in
Check-in time is 3 pm. The door to your room will be open on your arrival day.
In Nybyen you will find two keys inside your room, one for the door and one for the weapon safe. At Sjøskrenten you will find one key inside your room.
Short-term tenancy
The Arctic Student Welfare Organisation of Norway rents studio apartments at Sjøskrenten to students requiring short-term accommodation. The student housing at Sjøskrenten is centrally located in Longyearbyen just a five-minute walk from the UNIS campus. The studio apartments are furnished and the kitchens are fully equipped.
