How to Have a Great Start to Your Studies!

For many, the social aspect is one of the most important parts of student life. But how do you get to know others on campus? There are many opportunities—here are our best tips for a great start to your studies.

Say hi!

A very simple tip, but one that can still be forgotten. At the start of the fall semester, most people are in the same boat as you; they want to get to know others. So why not say hi and strike up a conversation with the person next to you while waiting for everyone to settle in the auditorium or while people find the right mentor group?

Attend Classes and Be on Campus

If you’re part of the welcome week, it’s no secret that the evenings can get long. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it can be a bit unfortunate if you have classes early the next day.

Even though it might be tough in the morning, it is highly recommended to attend in-person classes. It’s much easier to get to know the people you study with, and you might even find your future study group.

By attending classes, you will automatically spend more time on campus and stay informed about what’s happening.

Join a Student Organization

Student organizations give you the opportunity to meet others across different fields of study. At each campus, exhibitions of student organizations and student offers are held at the start of the semester. Find your campus event here and get to know student life where you live!

If you have a sport you’re passionate about or just want to try something new, this is a golden opportunity to do so at the start of your studies. If you’re a student in Tromsø, Alta, or Harstad, all student sports teams have various subgroups you can join. Maybe you’ll meet someone who shares your passion for handball!

If sports aren’t your passion, there are plenty of other associations you can try out. These can be with those studying the same field as you or across different subjects and faculties.

Volunteer at the Student House or Student Pub at Your Campus

Driv in Tromsø, City Scene in Alta, and Tekniker’n in Narvik are all student houses you can visit with friends or to meet new people.

The student houses are places where students can gather for concerts, board games, or a drink. Throughout the academic year, there are regular quiz or karaoke nights organized as well.

To organize various events, the student houses depend on volunteers. So why not become part of the team and get the chance to meet others this way?

Live with Other Students

The student budget isn’t always the most generous, so living with one or more other students can be helpful. Additionally, it’s social. Living in shared housing lets you have dinners together or enjoy movie or game nights.

Here, you’re both economical and social—talk about killing two birds with one stone.

At Samskipnaden, you have the opportunity to live with other students. Read more about our student housing here.
