For many, the social aspect is one of the most important parts of a student life. But how do you get to know others on campus? There are many opportunities—here are our best tips for a great start to your studies.
Say hi!
A very simple tip, but one that can still be forgotten. At the start of the fall semester, most people are in the same boat as you; they want to get to know others. So why not say hi and strike up a conversation with the person next to you while waiting for everyone to settle in the auditorium or while people find the right mentor group?
Join Debut Week International and our buddy week program
The first official event for international students at UiT is Debut Week International—and it's an experience you would not want to miss. Attending this program is one of the best ways to start building your social network and begin your academic journey on the right foot.
Balancing Welcome Week and Early Classes - If you're participating in Welcome Week, you'll quickly notice that the evenings can be lively—and sometimes late. While this is part of the fun, it can make those early morning classes a bit more challenging.
Even if you're feeling tired, we strongly encourage you to attend your in-person classes. Being physically present makes it easier to connect with your peers, build relationships, and maybe even form a study group that lasts through your time at UiT.
Plus, spending more time on campus naturally keeps you in the loop with what’s going on and helps you feel more at home.
Fadderuka - As a new student, you’ll soon hear about Fadderuka and Faddere (buddies)—and that’s something to look forward to!
Faddere is more experienced students, that are here to help you settle in, make friends, and get to know your new environment. These are the people you'll be seeing regularly throughout the semester, working together on projects, studying for exams, and making memories.
We struggle to find buddies for exchange students since those who walked in your shoes the previous semester has gone back to their home university but fear not!
You and the other students you meet during Debut Week International are more than welcome to join in on all the fun activites we have planned!Check out our calendar, join in on the events and you will meet many students, both international and Norwegian!
Student organizations give you the opportunity to meet others across different fields of study. At each campus, exhibitions of student organizations and student offers are held at the start of the semester. Find your campus event here and get to know student life where you live!
If you have a sport you’re passionate about or just want to try something new, this is a golden opportunity to do so at the start of your studies. If you’re a student in Tromsø, Alta, or Harstad, all student sports teams have various subgroups you can join. Maybe you’ll meet someone who shares your passion for handball!
If sports aren’t your passion, there are plenty of other associations you can try out. These can be with those studying the same field as you or across different subjects and faculties.
Do you want to know what is happening in the student community? Or maybe you just need a little help finding your people?
