Help! I haven't received student housing for the start of the semester, what should I do?

The start of the semester is rapidly approaching, and unfortunately, there are long wait lists for student housing at some campuses. This is especially a challenge in Tromsø. It's difficult for us to provide specific information about your position on the wait list or how long it will take before we can offer you housing. However, here are some tips from us if you have yet to receive housing.

Apply for temporary housing in Tromsø

We now have opened for applications for "roof over your head" accommodation for a shorter period while you are on the wait-list for student housing.

We offer temporary housing at Ørndalen Student Housing, or at Storskogåsen Kindergarten.

How to apply;

  1. log in to "My Page"
  2. Go to your "Inbox"
  3. Create a new inquiry and set "Tak over hodet" or "Roof over your head" as the title.
  4. Submit your request.

Our best tips if you don't have housing at the start of the semester

We continuously send out student housing offers, prioritizing those who applied early. Here are our best tips for what you can do if you haven't secured housing yet:

  1. Stay on the waiting list - vacancies will come up eventually! If you don't receive an offer from us before the semester starts, we recommend remaining on the waiting list. We often have many vacancies from September onwards, increasing the likelihood that we can offer you housing later.
  2. Apply for different types of housing and areas. To increase your chances of being allocated student housing, it's wise to apply for different housing types and areas. You can change your application on the Housing Portal at any time. We recommend accepting any available housing if you don't get your first choice. You can apply to change housing later.
  3. Find temporary housing for the start of the semester. We always recommend coming to the city even if you don't have a place to stay yet. It's much easier to find housing when you can attend viewings in person. There are several places where you can find housing on the private market, whether for long or short-term rental. In Tromsø, we offer temporary accommodation at the start of the semester.

To find housing in the private market, many use Finn.no or Hybel.no, and local buy-and-sell groups on Facebook.

Remain on the wait-list

If you have not received any offers from us before the start of the semester, we still recommend that you keep your spot on the wait-list. More of our housing often becomes available after the start of the semester, so there is still a high likelyhood that we can offer you housing if you keep your spot on the wait-list.

Apply for different areas and types of student housing

To increase your likelyhood of receiving an offer for student housing, we recommend that you apply to both different areas and types of student housing. Even if you are not offered your first-choice, we recommend you accept the offer. You may then apply to change student housing at a later time.

No longer need student housing?

If you've been accepted to another city or no longer need student housing for other reasons, it's important to delete your housing application with us. By removing yourself from the waiting list, you can help others get housing sooner.

Look for other alternatives

You may also look at the private renting market.

You may uses services such as Finn.no, Hybel.no or other private groups on Facebook.
