Small Choices, Big Impact

At Samskipnaden, sustainability is more than just words – it’s a natural part of everyday life, especially in our student kindergartens! From growing their own food to reducing food waste and learning about reuse, children gain early experience in caring for the environment and each other – an initiative that has delivered clear results.

Green Habits That Last a Lifetime

In the kitchen, the focus is on reducing food waste. The kindergartens only buy what they need, short-dated food is used first, and freezers are emptied before holidays. Leftovers are given new life in fresh meals – an effort that benefits both the budget and the environment.

Nutrition is also a priority. The menu includes more fish and vegetables and less meat – good for both the children and the planet!

The From Soil to Table project is a firm favourite among the children. Here, they get to be little farmers – sowing, planting, harvesting, and finally eating what they have grown themselves. This gives them a unique understanding of where food comes from and why it’s important to take care of it.

Small Hands, Big Impact

Sorting waste is a given, and children learn how to do it from an early age. Plastic use has been reduced, and reuse is key – birthday crowns and cups are used year after year, and broken items are repaired together with the children instead of being thrown away.

Several of our kindergartens have swap corners for clothes and books, allowing children to experience the joy of giving things a new life. They also spend a lot of time outdoors, where activities like litter picking teach them that small actions can make a big difference to the environment.

Community and Inclusion

Children learn early about friendship, cooperation, and inclusion – fundamental values that help create a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

Many of our kindergartens welcome children from different countries, offering a unique opportunity to explore diverse languages and cultures. The kindergartens actively work to ensure that every child feels seen and included, making this sense of community an essential part of Samskipnaden’s social focus.

In this way, our kindergartens contribute not only to the environment but also to the development of important social skills – in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
