Our Kindergartens

Universet Student Kindergarten

Universet Student Kindergarten is scenically located on the university campus near the ski slope and the hiking trail on Tromsøya.

About us!

The Milky Way flows through the five bases named after constellations in our solar system. The kindergarten has five bases with age-divided groups, with a capacity of a total of 85 children. Both of our bases for children over the age of three focus on the great outdoors and one of the bases focuses on music. We serve hot lunch every day.

Our Focus Area

Joint academic focus area for the student kindergartens 2026–2028:

The Diverse Kindergarten – A Multilingual Early Years Environment

“A multilingual early years environment is an important democratic measure, as it gives all children, regardless of linguistic background, greater opportunities to be heard, understood, and to actively participate in the community. Democracy in the kindergarten is about ensuring that all voices are valued and respected.”

Aims of the work:
Staff shall contribute to making linguistic diversity an enrichment for the entire group of children, support multilingual children in using their mother tongue, and at the same time actively promote and develop the children’s competence in the Norwegian language.

You can read more about the focus area in the shared operational plan for student kindergartens in Tromsø, as well as in the kindergarten’s annual plan and yearly schedule.

The Great Outdoors

Our outdoor area is located at the edge of the forest and inside the fence we find climbing trees, blueberry heather and a terrain that challenges the children. Both inside and outside, we have a rich bird life that the children are interested in. We have set up a bird box with a video camera, so that the children can follow on screen, and see how life in the bird box develops.

We have bike paths, swings, slides, houses, sandpits and dining areas in the area. In addition, we have a large beautiful lavvo with space for several bases at a time. Two to three days a week, two of the bases open outside and all the bases use the lavvo for activities and meals whenever they want.

As we are this close to the hiking trail and the forest, it is natural for us to go for a walk outside the kindergarten's patio all year round. We have a gapahuk close by where even the youngest can join the hike.

A Day at Kindergarten

We start the day with breakfast inside the base or outside in the lavvo. The children eat packed meals for breakfast while we serve hot lunch later in the day, and at the end of the day a fruit meal is served. The days consist of regular trip days, preschool club, two-year club, music gatherings, art activities and free play.

We have a large common room, Cassiopeia, in the middle of the kindergarten which is used diligently by both young and old. The youngest children sleep outside in their own pram and those who need to rest have a rest at the base.
