Information about health services available to you as an international student
Health services are available to you before you are properly settled, but may differ from what your rights will be eventually. Here you will find guidelines on what to do if you need health services during the first part of your stay.
We recommend students (except Nordic students) staying only 1 semester or less, to bring health insurance from home, regardless of your nationality. We do have a user fee-based National Insurance Scheme (NIS) in Norway, and it is possible to apply for a voluntary membership if you are planning to stay more than 3 months, but there is a processing time, so the best would be to bring insurance from home. If you have a health condition that requires membership, please get in touch with the student counselling centre for application assistance.

For students in Tromsø: You can get in touch with Kraft University Health Centre when you need to see a doctor. This is less expensive than using the emergency clinic during daytime. You can find their contact information here.
We recommend students staying two semesters or more, apply for a Norwegian personal identification number as soon as you have registered at the local police. Apply for this number at the local tax office (Skatt Nord). When your ID number is issued, you are automatically a member of the Norwegian fee-based National Insurance Scheme (NIS), and you will automatically be assigned a personal doctor.
