Semester fee - what is your money actually used for?

All students in Norway must pay the semester fee to take exams. But what is this money actually used for? Here is a quick overview!

Facts first

The semester fee does not go to UiT – it goes to Samskipnaden, which works to ensure that you are doing well during your studies. Samskipnaden offers everything from student housing to health services, canteens, and fitness centers – and is present at many campuses: Tromsø, Harstad, Narvik, Alta, Svalbard, and Fjelldal.

You can also choose to give an extra 40 kroner to the Students' and Academics' International Assistance Fund (SAIH), which works for education in developing countries – completely voluntary, but very much appreciated!

From students to students

A small part of the semester fee goes to the Norwegian Student Organization (NSO), which fights for students' rights nationally.

But the largest share goes to you and your fellow students through Samskipnaden's offers and support for student life. This includes:

  • Freshers' weeks (fadderuker) and events
  • Canteens and coffee shops
  • Health and counseling services
  • Training, student sports, and associations
  • Kindergartens and much more!

No freshers' week (fadderuke) without a semester fee

The largest single item from the semester fee is set aside for student-run student welfare. This means that a portion of the semester fee funds go to the Student Parliament at UiT, which distributes the funds based on applications from the various student organizations at UiT. Around 40 student associations receive money every year through the Student Parliament, including:

  • Debut Week in Tromsø
  • Freshers' Week in Finnmark
  • Tromsø Students' Sports Club (TSI)
  • Welfare Council in Harstad and Narvik
  • And a wide range of smaller associations

The student democracies at each faculty also receive funds, and therefore the money goes back to you, whether you are part of an association, participate in events, or simply enjoy everything that happens on campus.

What does student welfare mean?

In short: Everything that makes your student life better!

The semester fee makes it possible for the Student Union to offer, among other things:

  • Good health services with free advice, conversations, and courses
  • Affordable kindergarten
  • Support for social and cultural events
  • Affordable training and good sports facilities
  • Welfare coordinators and support staff

All this – thanks to the semester fee!
