Running a student organization

Recruitment

Recruiting new members and board members is often a challenge for many organizations—but it doesn’t have to be.

How do student organizations at UiT recruit?

In a survey, we asked student organizations at UiT how they work to recruit new members. The most common answers were:

🔸 Social media, especially Facebook and Instagram
🔸 Stands with competitions and refreshments
🔸 Visiting classrooms (especially relevant for program-specific organizations)
🔸 Music organizations say open rehearsals are effective
🔸 Sports groups recommend open training sessions, especially at the start of the semester
🔸 Participation in StudEXPO and during the student orientation week (Fadderuka)
🔸 Recruitment through acquaintances is often effective
🔸 Flyers, posters, and marketing materials placed around campus

Recruitment and visibility

Most people join an organization because they heard about it through someone they know. Many students who are not active in organizations are not inactive because they don’t want to participate, but because they are unaware of the opportunities or haven’t been invited.

Visibility is therefore extremely important. Organizations that plan recruitment early have a higher chance of reaching engaged students. We recommend that organizations be active during the start of the semester, especially at events like StudEXPO and Fadderuka, to reach new students early.

Questions you should always be able to answer:

🔸 Who can join the organization, and how many members can we accommodate?
🔸 Why should someone join the organization?
🔸 What do we expect from new members?
🔸 How do we take care of new members?

Recruitment for board positions

When recruiting board members, it is important to be clear about which positions are available. Include:

🔸 What the position involves
🔸 Expected workload and time commitment
🔸 Which tasks the person will work on

This gives potential applicants realistic expectations and makes it easier to attract engaged individuals.

Recruitment of general members

Recruiting members should be an ongoing effort throughout the year. It is rarely effective to start the process only a few weeks before the annual general meeting.

Use social media and various meeting arenas to inform students about the organization and be available to answer questions. Good visibility and accessibility increase the chances of engaging more new members.
