New Year, New Realistic Goals

A new year with a fresh slate allows us to reflect on our goals and set the course for a great semester.

But first: self-reflection

While New Year's resolutions are often tied to personal growth, it's also great to set some academic goals to clarify what you'd like to improve this semester.

Before setting goals, take some time to reflect on your current strengths and areas where you have potential for improvement. Write down what you'd like to work on, whether academic, personal, or a combination. This will give you a clear starting point for defining your goals.

P.S. This is also a great opportunity to pat yourself on the back for the progress you've already made and the things you've gotten better at! 😉

Academic Goals

Setting concrete academic goals gives you direction in your studies. Here are some examples to inspire you to define and set your own realistic goals for the new semester:

  1. Improve Study Techniques: Identify ineffective study methods and replace them with new strategies that work for you. This could include using concept maps, participating in group studies, or creating summaries.

Examples of Goals:

  • Put away your phone while working.
  • Find a study group.
  • Write summaries for your subjects as you go.

2. Active Participation: Increase your involvement in lectures by asking questions, engaging in discussions, and collaborating with fellow students. This not only enhances your understanding of the subject but also helps build your confidence and ability to speak up and express your opinions!

Examples of Goals:

Ask two questions during the lecture.Invite classmates to a discussion on a topic.Provide feedback to the lecturer. Highlight something you found particularly good—or suggest something that could be explained in more detail!

3. Expand Your Network: Do you want to meet more students from other programs? Are you looking to explore career opportunities? Networking provides practical experience, fresh perspectives, and broadens both your social and academic horizons!

Evaluation = Learning

Set aside time once a month to regularly evaluate your progress:

  • Are your goals realistic?
  • Are you on track to achieve them within the set timeframe?
  • If needed, adjust your goals to maintain motivation and progress.

Defining goals can be a way to facilitate both academic and personal growth throughout a semester. But don’t take on too much at once! Try to be realistic about how much pressure you’re putting on yourself.

Think of this as a tool and method to become more aware of your ambitions and strengths—don’t set overly high expectations for the outcome. Set some goals, stay curious about the process, and reflect at the end of the semester on the lessons you’ve learned that you’d like to carry forward.

Good luck! ❤️
